“What broke your heart so bad that you had to close every door, that you say you have a dark soul and can't utter the word 'love' anymore?”
- Sanhita Baruah
When I began leading Heart-Healing Workshops it became clear to me that it was important to make a distinction between a closed heart and a broken heart.
Here's what I know about a closed heart. Think about a physical heart when it closes. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease. It's caused by plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries that supply blood to the heart and other parts of the body. Overtime, plaque buildup causes the inside of the arteries to narrow, partially or totally blocking blood flow. This decreased flow may then cause a life -threatening heart attack. You may be wondering, What does this have to do with the emotional and spiritual pain and suffering of a closed heart?
When the flow of Love is restricted, our heart - emotionally,
spiritually and possibly physically - eventually closes.
The answer is quite simple. So many people are walking around with a closed heart from the hurts, betrayals, regrets, shame, resentments, anger, and rage attached to wounds of the past.
Each of these unhealed wounds - more importantly the beliefs we have about them - constricts the flow of Love in our life. When the flow of Love is restricted, our heart - emotionally, spiritually and possibly physically - eventually closes. The result is that we become stingy in expressing our Love and our capacity to receive Love shuts down.
A closed heart is often accompanied with deep feelings of unworthiness and I'm not enough-ness.
A closed heart is often accompanied with deep feelings of unworthiness and I'm not enough-ness. And a belief that we are protecting ourselves from future pain and suffering. But, when we close our heart to the in-flow and out-flow of Love, we close ourselves to the greatest gift of life - LOVE. But, we're not doomed to a Loveless life...Yes, it takes courage to open our hearts, and we can start right now.
Use this guided visualization, at a time when it is safe for you to close your eyes, as a Love Note to Yourself.
